Puri is the easiest sea-and-temple holiday from the Asansol–Durgapur belt. In five or six days you can see Jagannath Temple, the Konark Sun Temple, Chilika Lake and Bhubaneswar's old temples.
How to reach
Puri is about 500 km from Raniganj. Most families travel overnight by bus or train and reach Bhubaneswar or Puri in the morning, so no holiday day is lost on the road.
Suggested plan (5 nights)
- Night journey from Raniganj to Odisha
- Bhubaneswar: Nandankanan Zoo, Dhauli Shanti Stupa, Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, then on to Puri
- Puri: Shree Jagannath Temple darshan, Gundicha Temple and the market
- Chilika Lake: drive to Satapada; boat ride for Irrawaddy dolphins (weather permitting)
- Konark and Lingaraj: Sun Temple at Konark, Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, then the return journey
Tips for a smooth trip
- Temple rules allow only Hindus inside Jagannath Temple; mobiles and leather items are not allowed – keep them at the hotel.
- Mornings are the calmest time for darshan.
- October to March is the most pleasant season. Rath Yatra (June–July) is a special but very crowded time.
- Swim only at guarded parts of the beach; the sea at Puri can be rough.
